Schlage Lock Rekeying: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Schlage lock rekeying in Los Angeles typically runs $85-$150 per cylinder when done on-site, and we carry the full pin kit for Schlage SC1 and SC4 keyways on every truck. Most single-family rekeys in neighborhoods like Los Feliz or Studio City are finished in 20-40 minutes. We stock Schlage-compatible bottom pins, top pins, springs, and master wafers, so you’re not waiting for a parts run.

Owners usually realize they need a rekey after a move, a lost key, or a roommate change. Sometimes it’s subtler: the key starts catching at 10 o’clock, or a tenant returns only one of three copies. In older Los Angeles homes, especially those built before 1980 with original Schlage B-series deadbolts, we’ve seen cylinders so worn that rekeying reveals internal damage that a simple key copy would miss.

Which Schlage Models This Applies To

Schlage uses two residential keyways that dominate Los Angeles homes: the SC1 (five-pin, found on most F-series handlesets and A-series knobs) and the SC4 (six-pin, standard on B-series deadbolts and many commercial ND-series levers). The SC4’s extra pin stack adds pick resistance, but both rekey the same way with the right pinning kit. To identify yours, remove the key and check the bow stamp, or look at the cylinder face: SC4 keys have a slightly longer blade and a “C” marking near the head.

We rekey Schlage F10 passage locks, F51 entry knobs, B60 deadbolts, and the full Camelot and Century handleset lines. For commercial-grade hardware, we handle ND and AL-series levers with interchangeable cores, plus the older D-series cylindrical locks still common in mid-century apartment buildings around Koreatown.

Aftermarket pinning kits work fine for residential rekeys, but we keep genuine Schlage bottom pins on the truck because their nickel-silver alloy holds tolerances better in coastal Los Angeles humidity. For master-keyed systems, we use Schlage original master wafers; generic equivalents can create ghost keys that open unintended doors. Blackthorn Locksmith & Security is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Schlage.

Signs Your Schlage Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • Key sticks at the 9 or 3 o’clock position. This usually means a worn bottom pin or a buildup of metal shavings inside the plug. In Los Angeles, desert dust blown in during Santa Ana winds accelerates this wear, especially on exterior garage-door locks.
  • Key works on one side of the door but not the other. The tailpiece or cam has slipped out of alignment with the bolt mechanism. This isn’t strictly a rekey issue, but we check it during every service because rekeying a misaligned cylinder masks the real problem.
  • Newly cut key won’t turn smoothly. If a hardware-store duplicate binds while the original works fine, the cylinder’s pin chambers may be ovaled from age. Rekeying with fresh, correctly sized pins often restores function without replacing the entire lock.
  • Loose cylinder rotates in the housing. The retaining clip or C-clip has failed. On Schlage B-series deadbolts, this clip sits behind the faceplate and requires removal to fix properly. We see this frequently on rentals in Venice and Santa Monica where salt air corrodes the clip.
  • Previous owner or tenant still has unknown copies. This is the most common reason we get called. Rekeying changes the pin combination so old keys no longer operate the lock, at a fraction of replacement cost.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Schlage rekeying costs in Los Angeles:

  • Single residential cylinder (SC1 or SC4): $85-$120
  • Second cylinder same visit (deadbolt + knob): $55-$85
  • Master-keyed residential cylinder: $120-$150
  • Commercial interchangeable core rekey: $95-$140

The range depends on cylinder condition, whether we need to extract a broken key first, and if the lock requires disassembly to reach the cylinder. Every rekey includes new bottom pins, top pins, and springs; we replace anything that shows wear rather than reusing old components. Our written price covers all labor and parts, with no call-out surcharge added on arrival. The price we quote on the phone is the price on the invoice.

All rekey work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a pin settles or a key starts binding within a year, we return and fix it.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner with a Schlage rekeying kit and a follower tool can rekey a simple five-pin cylinder on a workbench. The risk isn’t injury, it’s a lock that fails at midnight with no backup. We’ve been called to homes in Echo Park where a DIY rekey left a driver spring bent behind the plug, jamming the cylinder entirely. Extracting that spring without damaging the housing takes longer than the original rekey would have.

What you can safely check: confirm your Schlage model from the stamp on the latch face, count how many keys you need cut, and test every existing key to see which still work. What we handle: disassembling locks with hidden cylinder screws, rekeying handlesets where the cylinder connects to a complicated tailpiece, and master-keying systems where pin stacking order matters. You should know exactly what is happening to your door before we pick up a tool.

If you’re in Los Angeles and need it done today, call (818) 390-9007. We’ll confirm the model, quote the full price, and dispatch a background-checked, uniformed technician with the right pinning kit already on the truck.
