Sargent Master Key Systems: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Sargent-compatible master key systems across Los Angeles, with most jobs completed same-day at installed prices ranging from $340 to $780 depending on cylinder count and keying complexity. The price we quote on the phone is the price on the invoice, and we carry Sargent 6300, 6400, and 6500 series cylinders and key cores on our trucks for commercial properties from Downtown to the Westside. Most property managers discover a Sargent master key system is failing when a sub-master suddenly opens a door it should not, or when a grand master key starts sticking in multiple cylinders on the same floor.
Which Sargent Models This Applies To
Sargent master key systems break down into three families, and knowing which one you have saves a return trip. The 6300 series (mortise cylinders, common in pre-2010 Los Angeles office buildings) uses a .595-inch diameter cylinder with Sargent’s LA keyway. The 6400 series rim cylinders, found on many steel security doors in industrial pockets near Vernon and Commerce, share the same keyway but mount differently and require a separate tailpiece measurement. The 6500 series LFIC (Large Format Interchangeable Core) appears in newer commercial builds and schools from Pasadena to Santa Monica; these cores swap without disassembling the lock but only mate with Sargent-specific housings.
We carry OEM Sargent cylinders and key cores, plus quality aftermarket equivalents from GMS and Ilco that meet the same pinning specifications at roughly 30% lower parts cost. The aftermarket route works well for standard 6-pin systems, but we recommend OEM for 7-pin master key hierarchies or any system using Sargent’s XC high-security sidebar, where tolerance stacking becomes noticeable. To identify your cylinder, look for “SARGENT” stamped on the cam or face, then measure the cylinder length from the face to the rear of the housing. A 1-1/8-inch length is standard for 1-3/4-inch doors; 1-3/8-inch for thicker fire-rated doors common in Los Angeles multi-family buildings post-1994.
Signs Your Sargent Master Key System Is Failing
- Cross-keying: A tenant key suddenly operates a neighboring unit, or a sub-master opens a grand-master-only door. This happens when worn pin chambers in Sargent cylinders allow shear-line overlap, especially in buildings near the coast where salt air accelerates brass pin corrosion. We see this most in 6300 series cylinders that have not been rekeyed in eight-plus years.
- Key sticking or difficult withdrawal: The key binds at the 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock position, requiring jiggling to remove. Usually indicates a mushroomed top pin or debris in the chamber; in master-keyed Sargent cylinders, the added master pins create more friction surfaces to fail.
- Inconsistent operation across the hierarchy: The grand master works fine, but sub-masters fail on random doors, or vice versa. This points to a keying error during a past rekey, or progressive wear changing the effective bitting depths. Los Angeles’s hard water and dust from Santa Ana wind events compound the issue by leaving abrasive deposits in the keyway.
- Core rotation or “spinning” in LFIC housings: The 6500 series core turns freely without retracting the latch. The control lug has sheared or the retaining clip has fatigued. This is not a user-serviceable failure; the core must be extracted with a control key, and forcing it risks jamming the entire housing.
- Keyway deformation or visible cracking: The keyway mouth shows spreading or the plug face has hairline cracks. Common in high-traffic Sargent cylinders where brass keys have worn against soft brass keyways over decades. Once the keyway geometry shifts, no amount of lubrication restores reliable master key function.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Single Sargent cylinder replacement (OEM) | $180 - $260 |
| Single Sargent cylinder replacement (aftermarket equivalent) | $140 - $200 |
| LFIC core swap with rekey to existing master | $220 - $320 |
| Full system rekey (up to 10 cylinders, new master hierarchy) | $680 - $780 |
| Additional cylinders beyond 10 | $55 - $85 each |
These are installed prices for Los Angeles properties, inclusive of parts, labor, and new keys cut to your master key schedule. What drives the range: cylinder type (mortise vs. rim vs. LFIC), whether we are matching an existing master or building a new hierarchy, and access (scaffolding or after-hours rates apply for some Downtown high-rises). We quote the full price before dispatch, and that number appears on the invoice unchanged. Every master key system job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise; if a cylinder drifts out of spec or a key stops working, we fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There is one thing a property owner can safely check: verify whether the failure follows the key or the cylinder. Insert the problem key in a different cylinder of the same hierarchy. If the key works normally elsewhere, the cylinder is at fault. If the key fails everywhere, the key itself is worn or damaged. Beyond that, Sargent master key systems are not a DIY project. The pinning math for a six-level master key hierarchy involves thousands of potential shear-line conflicts, and one wrong pin placement creates a security hole that may not show up for months. Improperly removing an LFIC core without the control key can destroy the housing, turning a $200 repair into a $600 lock replacement. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Sargent, and we carry the pinning kits, depth keys, and factory specifications to rebuild your system correctly the first time. Call (818) 390-9007 and we will walk through what you are seeing before we schedule anything.
FAQs
In Los Angeles conditions, a properly maintained Sargent master key system lasts 12 to 18 years in moderate-traffic commercial use, or 8 to 12 years in high-traffic applications like apartment lobbies or school main entrances. Coastal properties from Marina del Rey to San Pedro see shorter lifespans due to salt-air corrosion of brass pins. Call (818) 390-9007 for a free assessment of your system’s remaining life.
Sometimes. Individual cylinders can be repinned to restore master key function if the hardware is sound and the keyway is not deformed. However, if multiple cylinders in the hierarchy are failing, or if the master key schedule itself has logical errors, rebuilding the system from scratch is more reliable and often more economical long-term. We will tell you plainly which path makes sense after inspecting two or three representative cylinders.
A single Sargent cylinder swap takes 30 to 45 minutes on-site. A full system rekey for a 10-cylinder property takes 3 to 4 hours, including key cutting and verification of every level in the hierarchy. We schedule these during business hours for commercial properties, or coordinate with your building manager for after-hours access if needed.
Yes. We carry Sargent 6300 and 6400 series cylinders, 6500 LFIC cores, and pinning kits for 6-pin and 7-pin systems on every Los Angeles service vehicle. For specialized keyways or XC high-security sidebar systems, we may need one business day to pull from our warehouse, but we will tell you that when you call so there are no surprises.

Shane Delaney grew up in Silver Lake back when the reservoir still had a chain-link fence around it, and he has been working locks and deadbolts across Los Angeles ever since he completed his locksmithing coursework at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College on Washington Boulevard. He spent his first years on the job doing residential rekeying and car lockouts all over the east side, and over time built a reputation for being the technician who actually explains what he is doing before he touches anything. “You should know exactly what is happening to your door before I pick up a tool.” When he is not on a job, you will usually find him at one of the weekend farmers markets in Echo Park or tinkering with a vintage pin-tumbler lock he picked up at a swap meet.
