Sargent Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Sargent deadbolt hardware across Los Angeles, with most residential installations running $280-$520 and commercial-grade Sargent BHW or 4800 series jobs landing between $450-$780. Same-day installation is available when you call before 2 PM, and we carry the full Sargent residential and light commercial lineup on our trucks. Most Los Angeles owners discover their Sargent deadbolt is failing when the key starts catching in the Baldwin or Schlage cylinder they had swapped in years ago, or when the thumb turn grows stiff from a decade of Santa Ana dust working into the mechanism.
Which Sargent Models This Applies To
Sargent deadbolts fall into several series, and matching the right hardware to your door prep matters more than with most brands because Sargent uses a slightly longer backset standard on many commercial units. The 4800 series single-cylinder deadbolts and 4870 series double-cylinder models are what we see most in Los Angeles homes built between 1965 and 1995, especially in neighborhoods like Los Feliz and Pasadena where original Sargent hardware was spec’d by the builder. The BHW series handlesets with integrated deadbolts are common in Hancock Park and the mid-Wilshire corridor.
To identify your model, check the face of the deadbolt for a small stamped “SARGENT” logo and a four-digit number. The backset, measured from the door edge to the center of the cylinder, is typically 2-3/8 inches on residential Sargent units but can run 2-3/4 inches on commercial-grade doors. We carry both backsets and the corresponding strike plates on every truck. Aftermarket equivalents exist for most Sargent residential deadbolts, but we generally recommend OEM Sargent cylinders for the 4800 series because the tailpiece geometry differs enough from generic replacements that we’ve seen binding issues after six months of Los Angeles summer heat expansion.
Signs Your Sargent Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
- The key requires jiggling or repeated attempts to turn. This usually means the cylinder pins are wearing unevenly, or someone previously installed a non-Sargent cylinder with a tailpiece that doesn’t match the cam angle of the deadbolt body. The misalignment gets worse as the door settles in our dry Los Angeles climate.
- The thumb turn rotates but the bolt doesn’t retract fully. The tailpiece connecting the thumb turn to the bolt mechanism has either cracked or slipped its retaining clip. On Sargent 4800 series units, this happens after roughly 12-15 years of use, faster if the door is south-facing and takes direct afternoon heat.
- The bolt sticks or grinds when extending or retracting. The bolt face or the strike plate has corroded, or the door frame has shifted slightly and the bolt is dragging against the strike. In older Los Angeles homes with Douglas fir frames, seasonal humidity changes, even mild ones, can cause this misalignment.
- The entire cylinder pulls forward when you turn the key. The cylinder retaining screw has loosened or the housing threads have stripped. This is more common on Sargent units that had aftermarket cylinders installed previously, as the thread pitch doesn’t always match OEM spec.
- The deadbolt operates smoothly from inside but not with the key. The keyway has accumulated debris, or the cylinder was rekeyed at some point and the new pins are slightly out of spec for the Sargent keyway tolerance. We’ve seen this after DIY rekeying kits were used.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Sargent deadbolt installation costs in Los Angeles, with everything included:
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Residential Sargent 4800 series single-cylinder replacement | $280-$380 |
| Residential Sargent double-cylinder or BHW handleset install | $340-$520 |
| Commercial Sargent 4870 or 4900 series with high-security cylinder | $450-$780 |
| Additional door prep or strike relocation | $45-$95 |
The range depends on three things: whether we’re replacing like-for-like or adapting a different door prep, whether you need the cylinder rekeyed to match existing keys, and whether the strike plate needs relocation due to frame settling. Every price is written and confirmed before we touch a tool. The invoice matches the written price exactly. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation, and Sargent OEM hardware carries its own manufacturer’s warranty.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check whether the issue is simply a loose cylinder retaining screw, visible when you remove the interior thumb turn with a Phillips head. If that’s all it is, tightening it may solve the problem. You can also verify your backset measurement with a tape measure from the door edge to the cylinder center.
Where DIY goes wrong is in the cylinder swap itself. Sargent deadbolts use a specific tailpiece length and cam orientation that varies by series. Installing the wrong one leaves you with a door that locks but won’t unlock, or a thumb turn that spins freely while the bolt stays put. We’ve been called to Los Angeles homes where a homeowner spent three hours and $80 on the wrong part, then needed us to remove and replace it anyway. If your door is the one your kids use to get in after school, or the main entry for your business, that risk usually isn’t worth the savings. Call us at (818) 390-9007 and we’ll give you the exact price before we dispatch.
FAQs
A properly installed Sargent residential deadbolt typically lasts 15-20 years in Los Angeles, though direct sun exposure and lack of lubrication can cut that to 10-12. The dry climate helps prevent corrosion but accelerates lubricant evaporation. Call (818) 390-9007 for a free inspection if yours is approaching that age.
Sometimes. A loose cylinder or sticky bolt can often be rebuilt with new pins, springs, and lubrication for less than full replacement. But if the deadbolt body itself is cracked or the tailpiece slot is worn, replacement is the only reliable fix. We always quote both options when both exist.
Most Sargent deadbolt replacements take 45-75 minutes, including removal of the old hardware, door prep adjustments, installation, testing, and cleanup. Commercial-grade units with mortise prep or access-control integration take longer. We schedule a two-hour window and usually finish well within it.
Yes. We carry the 4800 series, BHW handlesets, and 4870 commercial-grade deadbolts in both standard finishes. Less common finishes like antique brass or satin nickel may need a quick parts run, which we handle same-day in the Los Angeles area. Call (818) 390-9007 to confirm availability for your specific model and finish.
