Kwikset Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Kwikset deadbolt installation in Los Angeles typically runs $145-$285 for a standard single-cylinder replacement, including the new hardware, door prep, and alignment. We stock Kwikset 660, 980, and SmartKey series deadbolts on every truck, and most residential jobs in Los Angeles are completed same day. Most homeowners realize their deadbolt needs attention when the key starts catching at 6 a.m. or the thumb turn grinds instead of throwing the bolt smoothly.
Which Kwikset Models This Applies To
Kwikset has produced dozens of deadbolt lines over the years, and not every backset or faceplate swaps cleanly. We regularly work with the 660 series (the builder-grade single cylinder found in most Los Angeles tract homes from the 1990s onward), the 980 series (ANSI Grade 2, better metal content), the 994 series (double-cylinder for doors with glass panels), and the SmartKey variants that allow homeowner rekeying without disassembly. The giveaway is usually the keyway shape: SmartKey uses a sidebar mechanism that feels different under tension than a standard pin-tumbler 660.
Backset matters in older Los Angeles homes. We see 2-3/8″ standard backsets in postwar bungalows in Echo Park and Silver Lake, but 2-3/4″ commercial backsets turn up in Mid-Century condos and some 1980s stucco boxes in the Valley. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing bore. If your old deadbolt has a rectangular faceplate and the new one ships with a round drive-in collar, the door needs mortising. We carry both faceplate styles on the truck. Aftermarket deadbolts from Defiant or Gatehouse will physically fit a Kwikset bore, but the strike plate alignment and cylinder tolerances often differ by a sixteenth of an inch. That gap is what causes a bolt that throws but does not fully seat.
Signs Your Kwikset Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
- The key requires jiggling or repeated insertion to turn. This usually means the cylinder tailpiece has worn or the cam is no longer lifting the bolt mechanism cleanly. In Los Angeles, we see this accelerated by dust infiltration during Santa Ana wind events, which settles into the keyway and acts as abrasive compound.
- The thumb turn rotates but the bolt does not extend or retract fully. The internal bolt mechanism has likely cracked at the pot-metal joint where the thumb turn spindle meets the bolt carrier. Kwikset 660 series hardware is particularly prone to this after fifteen to twenty years of use.
- The entire deadbolt body feels loose in the door. The mounting screws have stripped the door face, or the original installer used the included 3/4″ screws instead of longer fasteners that bite into the door stile. This is common in hollow-core doors or where a previous owner forced the hardware.
- The strike plate rattles or the bolt misses the strike by a visible margin. Seasonal humidity swings in Los Angeles cause door frames to shift slightly, especially in older homes with Douglas fir jambs. The bolt may still engage, but the misalignment stresses the mechanism every time it is forced.
- The SmartKey cylinder will not rekey or accepts the old key after rekeying. The sidebar fingers inside the cylinder have worn or the cradle was forced during a previous rekey attempt. SmartKey is convenient when it works, but the internal plastic components do not tolerate rough handling.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service Component | Typical Range in Los Angeles |
|---|---|
| Standard Kwikset 660 single-cylinder deadbolt, installed | $145 - $195 |
| Kwikset 980 ANSI Grade 2 deadbolt, installed | $185 - $245 |
| Kwikset SmartKey deadbolt, installed | $195 - $285 |
| Double-cylinder 994 (key both sides), installed | $225 - $295 |
| Door prep or mortising (if needed) | $35 - $75 |
| Strike plate relocation or jamb reinforcement | $45 - $95 |
What drives the range: the deadbolt grade you select, whether the door needs new bore holes or faceplate mortising, and if the strike requires relocation. Every price is written and confirmed before we pick up a tool. The number on the phone is the number on the invoice. No call-out surcharge, no trip fee added on arrival. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation and alignment. If the bolt binds or the cylinder sticks within a year, we return and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There is a honest middle ground here. A homeowner with a screwdriver and patience can usually remove two mounting screws and swap a like-for-like deadbolt in twenty minutes. Where DIY goes wrong: drilling new bore holes without a door jig, which splinters the veneer on a solid-core door or blows through the thin face of a hollow-core unit. Misaligning the strike so the bolt wears against metal instead of seating cleanly. And the SmartKey rekey process, which requires the working key, the new key, and the reset tool inserted in a specific sequence. We have replaced dozens of SmartKey cylinders that were bricked by a skipped step.
Shane Delaney put it this way after a call in Los Feliz last year: “You should know exactly what is happening to your door before I pick up a tool.” That is the standard we hold to. If you are handy and the swap is truly identical hardware, no bore changes, no alignment issues, DIY is reasonable. If the door is steel, fiberglass, or vintage wood with a fragile veneer, or if you need the strike relocated, the risk of damage exceeds the cost of a clean professional install.

FAQs
A Grade 3 Kwikset 660 in a front door used twice daily typically lasts twelve to eighteen years in Los Angeles before internal wear becomes noticeable. Coastal moisture in Marina del Rey or San Pedro can shorten that by a few years; inland dryness in the San Fernando Valley tends to preserve the metal but harden any plastic components faster. Call (818) 390-9007 if yours is showing early wear.
Sometimes. A loose cylinder can be re-secured, a dry mechanism can be lubricated with graphite, and a misaligned strike can be repositioned. But once the internal bolt carrier cracks or the SmartKey sidebar fails, repair parts are not sold separately and replacement is the practical fix. We will tell you honestly which applies during our free estimate.
A straightforward replacement on a standard wood door takes twenty to thirty minutes. Door prep, strike relocation, or working around a security door with a steel frame adds forty-five minutes to an hour. We schedule enough time that we are never rushing past a detail that matters.
Yes. We carry the 660, 980, SmartKey, and 994 double-cylinder lines in satin nickel, polished brass, and matte black finishes. If you have a specific finish or a vintage Kwikset design that is now discontinued, we can source it within twenty-four hours or discuss equivalent hardware that matches your existing door hardware.
