Medeco Master Key Systems: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Medeco-compatible master key systems across Los Angeles, with most residential and small commercial jobs running $340-$780 installed depending on cylinder count and pinning complexity. Same-day service is available when you call before noon, and we carry Medeco Biaxial, M3, and X4 cylinders on our trucks. Most owners discover their master key system is failing when the grand master key suddenly works in some locks but not others, or when a sub-master starts opening doors it should not - usually after years of smooth operation in the dry Los Angeles climate.

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco master key systems break down into three cylinder families you’ll find in Los Angeles buildings: the legacy Biaxial (marked with a “B” prefix on the key bow), the current M3 (triple-locking sidebar with angled cuts), and the newer X4 (combining pin-tumbler and sidebar technology). The master keying logic differs across all three, so a Biaxial master key will not pin into an M3 cylinder even if the keyway looks similar.

To identify what you have, check the face of the cylinder for a small stamped code - Biaxial cylinders show “MEDECO BIA” or just “B,” M3 cylinders show “M3,” and X4 shows “X4.” The keyway shape also tells the story: Biaxial uses a relatively straight center groove, M3 adds a second sidebar channel, and X4 has a more complex warding pattern. If you’re reading a key code off the original paperwork, note that Medeco master key systems use a two-letter hierarchy (GMK for grand master, MK for master, CK for change key) that must match the pinning chart exactly.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Medeco, and we source both OEM Medeco cylinders and certified aftermarket equivalents from GMS and Ilco where the application allows. For master key systems specifically, we generally recommend OEM pinning kits because the tolerances on the sidebar angles - 15 degrees on Biaxial, variable on M3 - directly affect key interchange, and aftermarket sidebar components sometimes run .003-.005 inches loose, which can create ghost keys in a master-keyed environment.

Signs Your Medeco Master Key System Is Failing

  • The grand master key works in some locks but jams in others. This usually means the master pins in one or more cylinders have worn unevenly, or a bottom pin has sheared at the shear line. In Los Angeles, the combination of dry air and fine dust from nearby construction can accelerate this wear, especially in commercial buildings near the 10 or 110 corridors.
  • A change key suddenly opens doors outside its assigned hierarchy. This is the most serious failure mode - it means master pin stacking has created an accidental shear line, and your key control is compromised. It happens most often in systems that were expanded piecemeal without updating the original pinning chart.
  • Keys require jiggling or specific insertion angles. The sidebar slots in Medeco cylinders are precisely angled, and when the sidebar springs weaken or the sidebar itself develops burrs, the key lift geometry goes off. You’ll feel it as a gritty resistance rather than the smooth mechanical click Medeco is known for.
  • The cylinder turns but the latch doesn’t retract. This points to a tailpiece or cam misalignment where the cylinder interface meets the lock body, common in master-keyed mortise sets where the cam profile was modified for the master keying and has worn eccentric.
  • Key extraction is difficult or leaves brass shavings on the key. The hardened steel inserts in Medeco keys can wear the pin chambers over time, especially if the original installer used lubricants that attracted grit. In coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like Venice or San Pedro, salt air corrosion on non-stainless components accelerates this.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Los Angeles commercial or residential master key system, expect $340-$780 installed for 3-7 cylinders with a two-level master key hierarchy (grand master plus one sub-master). Single-cylinder residential master keying runs $180-$290. The price includes the cylinder, pinning to your existing hierarchy or creation of a new one, two keys per cylinder, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

What moves the price: cylinder grade (residential vs. UL 437 listed commercial), the number of shear lines in the master keying (more levels = more master pins = more labor), and whether we need to decode an existing system from worn keys or have the original pinning chart. Rekeying an existing Medeco cylinder to a new master keying costs less - typically $45-$85 per cylinder - but only if the cylinder body and sidebar are in spec.

We deliver a written price before any work starts, and that number matches the invoice exactly. There is no call-out surcharge added on arrival, and no charge for the diagnostic if you proceed with the work.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here, and then there is a line you should not cross. What you can check yourself: confirm the keyway stamp, count your cylinders, and note which keys are failing where - that information saves us twenty minutes on site. What you should not attempt: disassembling a Medeco cylinder to re-pin it. The sidebar springs are under tension, the bottom pins are angled and will launch if the plug is removed without a follower, and the master keying math requires factory pinning charts that are not publicly available.

We have also seen owners damage the sidebar slots by forcing incorrect keys, turning a $200 rekey into a $340 cylinder replacement. If your master key system is showing any of the failure signs above, call (818) 390-9007 and we will walk through what we can diagnose over the phone before scheduling. You should know exactly what is happening to your door before we pick up a tool.
