Schlage Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Schlage deadbolt installation in Los Angeles typically runs $185-$325 for a standard single-cylinder replacement, including the hardware, labor, and door prep, with same-day scheduling available across most neighborhoods. We stock Schlage B60N, B62N, and B360 series deadbolts on our trucks, along with matching strike plates and faceplates, so the job is usually finished in under 90 minutes from arrival. Most homeowners in Los Angeles realize their deadbolt is failing when the key starts catching at 6 o’clock, the thumb turn grinds, or the bolt no longer throws fully into the strike - often after years of dust, Santa Ana dryness, and the occasional misaligned door frame from our seasonal soil shifting.

Which Schlage Models This Applies To

Schlage has produced deadbolts under several series names over the decades, and the right match depends on your door’s bore hole, backset, and whether you need a single-cylinder (key outside, thumb turn inside) or double-cylinder (key both sides) configuration.

The B60N is Schlage’s Grade 1 residential single-cylinder deadbolt, the one we install most often in Los Angeles homes from Echo Park to the Valley. The B62N is its double-cylinder counterpart, required by code on some doors with glass within 40 inches of the lock. The B360 series offers a more compact faceplate for older doors with narrower stiles, common in 1920s Spanish Revival homes around Silver Lake and Los Feliz. The ALX50 and ALX53 are the commercial-grade equivalents, using a larger 2-3/4 inch backset that won’t fit a standard residential door without re-drilling.

To identify your model, check the keyway face for a small stamped code - “B60” or “B62” usually appears above the key slot. The backset measurement, the distance from the door edge to the center of the bore hole, is either 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches on Schlage residential hardware. We carry both backsets and both cylinder types on every truck, so there’s no second trip. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Schlage, which means we’ll tell you plainly when a quality aftermarket equivalent will save money without sacrificing security.

Signs Your Schlage Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

  • The key catches or requires jiggling at the 6 o’clock position. This usually means the cam, the flat metal tongue connecting the cylinder to the bolt mechanism, has worn or bent slightly. In Los Angeles, the combination of dry air and occasional humidity spikes causes the metal to fatigue faster than in more stable climates.
  • The thumb turn rotates but the bolt doesn’t move. The tailpiece, the link between thumb turn and bolt, has likely sheared or slipped its clip. On Schlage B60 series deadbolts, this often happens after 8-12 years of use, sooner if the door is warped and the bolt is fighting friction.
  • The bolt sticks halfway or needs shoulder pressure to extend. The strike plate has shifted, or the bolt itself has developed burrs from repeated misalignment. Our soil in Los Angeles shifts seasonally, and door frames move with it - the deadbolt doesn’t fail alone, the geometry fails around it.
  • The cylinder spins freely in the housing. The retaining clip on the back of the cylinder has broken or fallen off. This is a small part with a big consequence, and it’s one of the reasons we carry full replacement cylinders rather than trying to source individual clips on a job.
  • The finish is flaking and the underlying brass is greening. Schlage’s older satin nickel and antique brass finishes can delaminate in coastal Los Angeles air, especially within a few miles of the Pacific. The lock still functions, but the corrosion often signals internal wear you can’t see yet.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s how Schlage deadbolt installation pricing breaks down in the Los Angeles market:

Service Price Range
Standard single-cylinder Schlage B60N installation $185 - $245
Double-cylinder Schlage B62N installation $225 - $295
Commercial-grade ALX series with re-drill $275 - $325
Strike plate relocation or frame repair $35 - $75

The range depends on three things: whether we can reuse the existing bore and strike (saves 20-30 minutes), whether the door is solid wood or hollow-core metal (different bit sets, different anchoring), and whether you want us to rekey the new deadbolt to match your existing Schlage house key. We rekey on-site for no additional charge if we’re already installing - it’s part of the job, not an add-on.

Every installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. The written price you approve before we start is the price on the invoice. No dispatch fee, no “trip charge” added after arrival. We explain the full number before picking up a tool, and we stick to it.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check the backset measurement yourself with a tape measure, and you can confirm whether your door is 1-3/8 or 1-3/4 inches thick - Schlage ships with different mounting hardware for each. You can also test whether the bolt binds by operating it with the door open; if it moves freely, the problem is frame alignment, not the deadbolt.

Where DIY goes wrong is in the details that aren’t visible. A deadbolt that looks seated can still have a misaligned tailpiece that jams two months later. The strike plate mortise needs to be deep enough that the plate sits flush, or the bolt shoulder will grind against the edge and fail early. And if you’re working with a double-cylinder deadbolt, there’s a specific sequence for installing the interior cylinder without damaging the connecting bar - get it wrong and you’ve bought a second deadbolt.

We’re happy to talk you through what you’re seeing before you decide. Call (818) 390-9007 and we’ll tell you whether it’s a 20-minute fix or a full replacement.
